How often should I redesign my website?

When you are looking to redesign your website, you are giving yourself an opportunity to reinvent the look of your businesses brand giving your users and audience something nice to look at when finding out information on your business or the services you provide.

Let’s start off by saying that there is no real time frame that you should follow when you are looking to redesign your websites look. However, it is suggested by web experts everywhere that a new redesign for a website should occur every 2 – 3 years as this is a long time in the digital world.

This time frame is recommended for a few reasons, you may have plugins and themes that are no longer supported and could cause security threats, design styles change and your navigation bar that was cool at the time could now look outdated, you may wish to add more content and your existing site does not flow the way you would want it too for a customer.

Below we are going to talk about some of the factors you should consider when deciding on whether your website should receive a redesign.

Looks and feels old

One of the main reasons for people wanting a redesign for their website is that their website looks old and does not look or function as well as newer sites. Having a slow old website can throw off potential customers as your website is an extension of your business. By having a modern and engaging website you are showing your customers that you can deliver the service or product that they need to a high standard.

Your website is not mobile friendly

We talk a lot about being mobile friendly in our blogs and we cannot iterate enough how important it is for current website design and development. As more and more people are using different devices to browse the internet there will be a greater increase of both tablet and mobile device traffic to your website.

By not having your website optimised for mobile devices you are missing out on a large percentage of potential customers and business. If a user comes to your website and they are unable to browse or access any of the content on the pages then they will simply click of the site, going to a site that is viewable on their device which could potentially be a competitor.

You don’t get any traffic

If the traffic to your website is non-existent then it’s probably time for a website redesign. There are many reasons that your website would not be receiving any traffic including, lack of keywords, not optimised correctly, slow loading speeds etc. There are numerous ways to monitor your websites traffic and if you can see that you aren’t receiving any from Search Results then it is probably a good idea to contact your web designer to get that improved upon.

Doesn’t work

This one is simple enough to understand, if your website doesn’t work then it’s time for a redesign. This idea can take many forms and can appear in different areas of your website. For example, you may have a content rich webpage which is buried beneath a bunch of parent pages roughly 8 clicks deep, this is not effective website design. Links leading to 404 pages, slow page loading speeds and non-mobile responsive sites are all other reasons of poo website design.

Our redesign checklist

Now that we have discussed some of the possible reasons that you should consider getting a website redesign, let’s go through our simple checklist to help summarise what we have discussed above.

  • Does your site look modern, or does it look outdated?
  • Does your site have features that don’t work?
  • Do your competitors have faster better-looking sites?
  • Have you updated your content in the past few years?
  • Does your website rank high on Search Results?
  • Are you receiving any traffic to your website?
  • Has your brand recently changed?
  • Is the flow of the website confusing and complicated?
  • Can your website process product orders?
  • Does your website function on mobile devices?

By keeping some of these in mind you will be able to stay ahead of your competitors when it comes to deciding on a website redesign. Your website is ultimately an extension of your business and should be treated as such. It is one of the first things a customer will see when they are searching for your business so you will want to leave an everlasting impression.
